The New York Yankees’ 2025 season is teetering on the edge of disaster even before Opening Day, as their ace pitcher Gerrit Cole undergoes scans for a suspected elbow injury. Reports indicate that Cole may need Tommy John surgery, potentially sidelining him for the entire season. However, Cole and the Yankees are exploring alternative treatments and seeking a second opinion.
MLB analyst Anthony McCarron has suggested several potential solutions if Cole misses significant playing time. McCarron believes that promoting players from the Yankees’ farm system might not be the first move. Instead, he suggests considering Will Warren, who has had a strong spring with a 1.13 ERA and is the team’s top remaining pitching prospect.
McCarron also recommends looking at the free agent market, mentioning names like Kyle Gibson, Spencer Turnbull, Patrick Corbin, Lance Lynn, and Sixto Sanchez. These players could provide much-needed depth to the Yankees’ rotation.

Will Warren has been getting some game time in spring and last pitched for the Yankees against the Philadelphia Phillies. It remains to be seen whether manager Aaron Boone will trust Warren or seek trade options.
McCarron also mentioned Michael King and Dylan Cease of the San Diego Padres, both of whom are heading into the final year of their contracts with the NL West team.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is prepared for the worst-case scenario, expressing concern about the team’s pitching depth. Cashman said, “I’m prepared for the worst. We will see how it plays out. I’m always wired to think the worst and hope for the best. Obviously not what you want, but it’s ultimately part of our journey here in 2025.”
In addition to Cole’s injury, the Yankees are already without AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil for the opening weeks of the season due to his latest injury. The team will also be without ALCS MVP Giancarlo Stanton, who could be out for a considerable time after sustaining tennis elbow in both arms.
