New York Yankees fans are becoming all too familiar with the routine of waking up to new injury updates, and Sunday was no exception. This time, it’s Clarke Schmidt who has joined the growing list of injured pitchers, further complicating the team’s already troubled rotation.
According to Chris Kirschner, Clarke Schmidt won’t start Monday’s Grapefruit League game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to shoulder soreness. Instead, he will throw a bullpen session to assess his condition. Manager Aaron Boone emphasized the team’s cautious approach, stating that Schmidt’s shoulder isn’t recovering as expected.
Schmidt, who was previously delayed in camp due to a stiff back, made his spring debut on March 11 against the Baltimore Orioles, where he struggled, allowing three runs in just 1 2/3 innings. Boone expressed hope that Schmidt will recover without issues after the bullpen session and return to the rotation soon.
This latest development adds to the Yankees’ mounting rotation concerns. Ace Gerrit Cole is out for the season with an elbow injury, and last year’s AL Rookie of the Year, Luis Gil, is sidelined with a lat strain. Additionally, Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with elbow pain and a chronic calf issue.

As of now, only two Yankees starters have been officially named for the regular season: Carlos Rodón, who will start on Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 27, and Max Fried, who will follow on March 29. Marcus Stroman is also expected to be part of the rotation, while the final spot remains a toss-up between Will Warren, Carlos Carrasco, and Allan Winans.
Given the team’s history of injuries this spring, it wouldn’t be surprising if Schmidt ends up missing more time. Yankees fans are left hoping that the team can find stability in their rotation before the season begins.
