2019 National League MVP Cody Bellinger recently opened up about his childhood memories from his dad Clay’s time with the New York Yankees. Bellinger reflected on his dad’s perseverance in the minor leagues before winning two World Series with the Bronx Bombers.
Clay Bellinger spent three years with the Yankees, from 1999 to 2001, and later played two games for the Anaheim Angels before being demoted to the minor leagues. Cody Bellinger, a two-time All-Star, was recently traded to the Yankees from the Chicago Cubs. In an interview with Yes Network’s Meredith Marakovits, the 29-year-old shared his memories of his father’s time in New York:
“I have some small memories of where we lived up north, I think it was called Rye,” Bellinger said. “I have a lot of memories from the minor leagues. It’s interesting, those Yankee days.”
Bellinger also expressed gratitude towards the Yankees for giving his father a chance in the major leagues after years in the minors:

“I remember, through old video footage, my dad’s journey. It’s great that the Yankees gave him a shot after so long in the minors. It means a lot to our family,” he added.
Before his two-year stint with the Chicago Cubs, Cody Bellinger played seven seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning the World Series in 2020 and earning the NLCS MVP in 2018.
Aaron Judge Welcomes Cody Bellinger to the Yankees
New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge is excited to have Cody Bellinger on the team. Judge, a two-time AL MVP, shared his thoughts on Bellinger’s potential with the Yankees:
“I’m excited. I’ve seen him hit a lot of homers over my head, especially with the Cubs and Dodgers. It’s going to be great to see him do that in pinstripes. This ballpark is perfect for him. He can hit to all parts of the field, especially right field.”
Judge also noted that having Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. batting behind Bellinger would be a significant boost, predicting a standout season for the fellow MVP.
