The New York Yankees kicked off their spring training with a roster that many believe is stronger and deeper than last season’s, as they aim to defend their American League championship. However, a shadow has been cast over their preparations with news of an injury to All-Star hitter Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton, who celebrated his 35th birthday in November, had an outstanding postseason performance, hitting 7 home runs, 16 RBIs, and achieving a 1.048 OPS in just 14 games. He was a key figure in the Yankees’ October success. Despite a full offseason to rest and prepare for the 2025 season, there are now doubts about his readiness for Opening Day.

  • Giancarlo Stanton stats (ESPN): .233 batting average, .298 on-base percentage, .475 slugging percentage, .773 OPS, 27 home runs, 72 RBIs, 20 doubles, and 49 runs scored in 417 at-bats.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed to reporters at spring training that Stanton is “behind schedule” due to an elbow issue that is expected to persist throughout the 2025 season. This could potentially affect his availability for the home opener in late March.

“He was doing some activities but had to stop for treatment. We don’t want to rush this and risk making it worse. We’ll have to manage it throughout the year, but we don’t want to push him too early.”

Boone likened the injury to “tennis elbow,” noting that Stanton played through it during the second half of the regular season and the playoffs. The team plans to take a cautious approach to avoid exacerbating the elbow soreness.

  • Giancarlo Stanton contract (Spotrac): $32 million salary in 2025, $19 million in 2026, $15 million in 2027, and a $15 million club option for 2028.

Stanton has not reached 420 at-bats in a single season since 2021. He was sidelined from June 23 to July 29 last year and, upon his return, had a .210/.292/.446 slash line with a .738 OPS in 157 at-bats.

In the past three years, Stanton’s performance has been significantly impacted by injuries. After a strong start with the Yankees, slashing .269/.353/.510 with a .864 OPS and a 134 wRC+ in his first four seasons, he now has a .212/.291/.454 slash line with a .744 OPS and 106 wRC+ in the last three seasons. Any absence would be a major blow to the Yankees’ lineup in 2025.
